The distillery name translates to “corner of the field” in Scottish Gaelic. This was true when the distillery was first established just outside Glasgow in 1823. During its history the distillery has undergone many ownership changes, perhaps none more significant than when the Morrison Bowmore Group purchased the property in 1984. Thus began a period of prosperity and innovation that caught the attention of Japanese drinks giant, Suntory, who purchased all of Morrison Bowmore’s properties including Auchentoshan. What sets Auchentoshan apart from all other distilleries in Scotland is that every drop of liquid has been triple distilled (as opposed to double distilled). This increases the alcohol by volume (ABV) to a higher percentage and create a much lighter spirit. Once barrelled, the ‘new-make’ spirit is influenced to a much greater extent by the wood and so Auchentoshan takes great care in selecting the very best casks. The award-winning Auchentoshan Three Wood has been aged in three different cask types. Starting with refill American bourbon casks, the liquid is then transferred to Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks and then the liquid is finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks. All this care produced a rich, complex whisky.
