A whisky from Campbeltown’s ‘newest, oldest distillery’, Glengyle. Originally closed in 1925, Glengyle was eventually bought in 2000 by Hedley Wright, the great-great nephew of the distillery’s original founder, and re-opened in 2004. Its whiskies are named Kilkerran both to avoid confusion with pre-existing whisky blends, and to pay homage to Saint Kerran, who had a religious cell in Campbeltown. Kilkerran 8 Year Old is lightly peated.
This is Batch #5 – bottled in February 2021 from 100% Oloroso Sherry Casks.
Nose: The peat aroma from the lightly peated barley is apparent as is the nutty Oloroso sherry hits. Roasted salty peanuts. Tart dried cherries, plums, red dates. Green musty grapes. Demerara sugar and thick molasses.
Palate: There’s an earthiness and saltiness, exactly what you want to taste in a Campbeltown dram. Very oily. Brown sugar and maple syrup. More tart dried red fruits reappear with morello cherries, dried plums and sour grape. Orange peel along with milk chocolate and walnut flavours bring some increased
Finish: Medium to long in length. Salted caramel mocha notes with liquorice-influenced maltiness.
